Wim Henderickx studied composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in Antwerp, where he also studied percussion. He took part in the ‘Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik’ in Darmstadt and attended sonology classes at Ircam in Paris and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.
Since 1996 Henderickx is COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE for Muziektheater Transparant, an international production company for music theatre and in 2013 he joined the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (deFilharmonie) as ARTIST IN RESIDENCE.
His scores are published by NORSK MUSIKFORLAG A/S.
He teaches composition and musical analysis at the Conservatories of Music in Antwerp and Amsterdam. He is also the main teacher of the Summer Composition Course for young composers in Neerpelt (B), organised by Musica, Impulse Centre for Music.
Many of his works are influenced by oriental music and philosophy. A CD with his 3 RAGAS (Megadisc MDC 7833) was released in 1999 by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, with Grant Llewellyn as the conductor. Following a trip through India and Nepal he wrote the TANTRIC CYCLE (2004-2010), seven compositions with the Orient as a source of inspiration.
He received the International Prize for Contemporary Music Flanders-Québec (1993) and the Eugène Baie I Award (1999). In 2002 he became ‘Laureate from the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium’ and in 2006 he was nominated for the Flanders Culture Prizes. In 2011 he received the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' at his birthplace Lier (B).
His work has been performed by major ensembles and orchestras in Belgium and abroad. He wrote his first opera TRIUMPH OF SPIRIT OVER MATTER in 2001 and ACHILLEUS, an opera for young people, had multiple performances in Antwerp (2003) and Copenhagen (2006). VOID (SUNYATA) (2007) for music theatre staged internationally from Zürich to Stavanger. This production was a starting point in conducting his own work.
Wim Henderickx was commissioned to write CANZONE for voice and piano for the semi-finals of the 2008 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels. For the Orchestre National de Belgique (ONB) Wim Henderickx composed SYMPHONY No.1, with performances in Luxemburg and Brussels (2012) and Stefan Blunier as the conductor.
MEDEA for music theatre toured Belgium and the Netherlands between 2011 and 2013 with HERMESensemble.
In 2011 Harmonia Mundi Benelux released the cd DISAPPEARING IN LIGHT with HERMESensemble and Wim Henderickx as the conductor. Worldwide release was in March 2015 (Launch Music International).
The cd TEJAS & OTHER ORCHESTRAL WORKS (2011) was released by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic with Martyn Brabbins as the conductor.
The cd WORKS FOR WIND INSTRUMENTS by I Solisti del Vento (2013) contains RESONATING LIGHT and three earlier works by Wim Henderickx.
The most recent recording TRIPTYCH, a collaboration with HERMESensemble (2014), contains 3 of Wim Henderickx's works (distribution Harmonia Mundi Benelux).
VISIONI ed ESTASI for mixed choirs (professionals and amateurs) and electronics premiered at the Flanders Festival Mechelen for TENSO Days 2015, with 200 singers conducted by James Wood.
